Airtel Warns Customers of Rising Digital Scams; Launches ‘Safe Second Account’ for Secure Payments
Gopal Vittal Writes to Users, Cautions Against Fraud Calls and Phishing Attempts

New Delhi, Dec 11, KNT: Airtel Vice Chairman and Managing Director Gopal Vittal has written to the company’s customers, warning them about a sharp rise in digital scams ranging from fake parcel delivery calls to phishing links and so-called digital arrest frauds. He said Airtel is witnessing an increasing number of attempts targeting unsuspecting users and reaffirmed that customer safety remains the company’s highest priority.
In his communication, Vittal announced the introduction of Airtel Payments Bank’s Safe Second Account, a secure payment option designed to protect users’ primary bank accounts from cyber fraud. He said that while UPI and digital payment platforms offer convenience, linking them directly to savings accounts exposes customers to financial risks.
“Any crime or fraud on our network pains us deeply at Airtel. Your safety is and will always remain our highest priority,” Vittal said. He added that Airtel has already deployed advanced AI systems that trigger instant alerts for spam calls and messages and block fraudulent links even if opened mistakenly. However, he said evolving digital frauds necessitate additional layers of protection.
According to Vittal, the Safe Second Account is meant exclusively for digital transactions and requires only a small balance while still offering interest. Since Airtel Payments Bank does not extend credit, customers are not required to keep substantial amounts in the account. Opening the account can be done through the Airtel Thanks App by completing Aadhaar and PAN-based KYC, setting an mPIN and funding the account.
Customers can top up the account either through transfers from their primary bank or by depositing cash at any Airtel Payments Bank retail point. Airtel said the service is aimed at giving users a secure buffer between payment platforms and their savings.
Vittal urged users to take advantage of the facility. “We encourage our customers to take a few minutes today to open a Safe Second Account and safeguard their money. Airtel remains dedicated to empowering you with secure, inclusive and easy-to-use financial services,” he said. [KNT]
