Wildlife Team Traps Mother Bear and Two Cubs After Repeated Sightings in South Kashmir
Anantnag, Dec 22, KNT: Wildlife authorities on Monday captured three black bears alive in the Nowgam belt of Shangus in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, following repeated movements of the animals near inhabited areas. Officials said the trap was positioned after locals reported frequent sightings over the past several days.
A team from the Wildlife Control Room Achabal under the Bringi Valley Range inspected the area early in the morning and found a mother bear and two semi-adult bears inside the installed cage. The wildlife staff initiated standard operating procedures, assessed the condition of the animals, and later released all three safely inside the forest zone of Bringi Valley.
A senior wildlife official told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that bears commonly stray close to human settlements during winter as natural food sources decline in the upper reaches. “These animals enter residential areas in search of food when their natural availability reduces, which increases the chances of conflict. Timely response helps keep both locals and wildlife safe,” the official said.

The department said the prompt operation helped avert a potential confrontation between locals and the animals in the densely populated belt of Shangus. Verification teams have been asked to continue monitoring the area. [KNT]
