Biting Cold Engulfs Sonamarg, Mercury Plunges to Minus 10.5°C

Ganderbal, Jan 24, KNT: Sonamarg reeled under extreme cold conditions as the minimum temperature plunged to minus 10.5 degrees Celsius, making the high-altitude area one of the coldest places in the Kashmir Valley, officials said on Saturday.

The sharp drop in temperature followed recent snowfall and subsequent clearing of skies, which intensified the night-time chill in the region. Locals said the severe cold has led to freezing of water bodies and supply lines, while movement during night and early morning hours has become extremely difficult due to icy conditions.

Sonamarg, which remains cut off for extended periods during peak winter, continues to face harsh living conditions as winter tightens its grip. Officials said adequate arrangements are in place to ensure availability of essentials, while authorities are closely monitoring the situation in view of the intense cold.

The cold conditions have further aggravated hardships for inhabitants and those stationed in the area, with demand for heating and fuel witnessing a sharp rise. Weather officials said such low temperatures are typical for Sonamarg during peak winter, especially after snowfall spells followed by clear nights.
