Doctors confront MLA at GMC Udhampur over patient death allegations

Udhampur, Jan 28, KNT: A tense confrontation broke out at the Government Medical College Udhampur after local legislator Pawan Gupta accused doctors of negligence in connection with the death of a patient, triggering heated arguments during a meeting.

According to reports, the incident occurred after the death of a patient at Government Medical College Udhampur, following which the MLA summoned doctors to question them over their alleged absence from the emergency ward at the time of the incident. Gupta reportedly reminded the medical staff of their professional responsibilities and demanded accountability.

The discussion soon escalated into a verbal clash as several doctors objected to the allegations. Witnesses said that during the heated exchange, one of the doctors attempted to snatch the microphone from the MLA’s hand, further intensifying the confrontation and prompting intervention by those present at the meeting.

Sources said protests were raised over what was described as persistent mismanagement and staff shortages at the hospital, with demands for better emergency care and round-the-clock availability of doctors.

Officials said the matter is being looked into and further action, if any, will follow after reviewing the circumstances surrounding the patient’s death. [KNT]
