Govt to review Jhelum Valley Road as alternative to Baramulla–Uri route: Minister

Baramulla, Jan 3, KNT: The government will review a proposal to develop the Jhelum Valley Road as an alternative route to the Baramulla–Uri Highway, particularly in view of frequent landslides that often disrupt traffic on the existing highway, Minister Javed Dar said on Saturday.

The minister said the issue would be evaluated in detail to assess its feasibility and viability. He added that the district administration would examine various aspects of the proposal and identify what could be taken forward in a practical manner.

Javed Dar was speaking to reporters after chairing a  meeting focused on infrastructure and development-related issues, including the functioning of the Fruit Mandi Sopore. He said the Chief Minister, during a recent review meeting, had directed the department to convene a meeting of officers to explore ways to improve facilities at the Sopore fruit mandi.

He said today’s meeting was held in that direction and deliberations were held on key requirements such as creation of multi-level parking facilities, installation of street lights and other essential infrastructure to ease congestion and improve overall functioning of the mandi.

The minister said that after compiling a detailed report based on the discussions and assessments, the same would be submitted to the Chief Minister. He expressed hope that the proposed measures would be approved and implemented in a phased manner.

On the Jhelum Valley Road proposal, the minister said the government remains open to evaluating the route as an alternative, especially during periods when the Baramulla–Uri highway remains closed due to landslides, adding that necessary studies would guide the final decision. [KNT]
