Neglect cripples Kupwara Satellite Campus, Arabic students suffer as faculty shortage persists at Kupwara Campus

Srinagar, Jan 1, KNT: Serious concerns have been raised over the functioning and development of the Kupwara Satellite Campus of the University of Kashmir, with students, parents and locals alleging prolonged administrative neglect affecting academics and infrastructure at the four-year-old campus
Located amid lush green forests at Wayan in the Kahmil watershed area of Kupwara district, the campus was established to provide quality higher education to students from remote areas of north Kashmir. The campus initially started with five-year integrated courses in Energy Studies and Physics, while Arabic was introduced recently
Sources told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that despite the appointment of 10 Assistant Professors by the current Vice Chancellor, the Arabic department continues to suffer due to an acute faculty shortage. Three Assistant Professors of Arabic were adjusted to Kupwara Campus after returning from the Kargil Campus following the abrogation of Article 370, but only one has joined at Kupwara. The remaining two are reportedly stationed at the main campus, resulting in academic loss to students of Arabic at Kupwara.

Parents and students have sought immediate intervention of the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor, demanding that the two Assistant Professors be deputed to Kupwara Campus without further delay. Students also highlighted the absence of proper road connectivity, stating that a 1.5 km road through the forest can significantly ease access to the campus, while the existing 3.5 km road from Kupwara town is narrow and in poor condition
Further demands include construction of residential quarters for faculty members, appointment of a full-time Director, and posting of a Joint Registrar to monitor administrative and developmental works at the campus. The students also urged the Vice Chancellor to visit the campus at least once a month to assess ground realities.
Meanwhile, locals have welcomed the decision of the Advisor to the Chief Minister, the Lieutenant Governor and the Vice Chancellor to start BSc Nursing at the Kupwara Campus from 2026, terming it a positive step towards strengthening higher education in the district
The campus authorities have stated that efforts are underway to establish modern infrastructure and state-of-the-art facilities to equip students with strong academic and practical skills. [KNT]
