Prolonged Kishtwar encounter enters third day as massive forest search continues

Kishtwar, Jan 20, KNT: The encounter in the Sonar forest area of Chatroo in Kishtwar entered its third consecutive day on Tuesday, with joint security forces continuing a massive search operation across the dense forest belt despite no fresh firing or contact being reported so far.

Senior officials said extensive surveillance measures remain in place, with drones and helicopters hovering over the suspected hideout zones to track any movement. Hundreds of soldiers from multiple units have been deployed deep inside the forest, combing vast stretches on foot, while sniffer dogs are being used to scan specific locations where militants are believed to have taken shelter.

The area remains under a tight security cordon. Roadside frisking and vehicle checks are continuing in Chatroo and adjoining routes as a precautionary measure to prevent any escape. Village Defence Guards have also been roped in to assist the forces, patrolling the forest fringes and maintaining vigil in vulnerable hamlets.

Officials said that although there has been no exchange of fire since the initial gunfight, the operation has not been called off, as inputs indicate the presence of militants in the area. Search parties are advancing cautiously, given the difficult terrain and thick vegetation.
