Sonamarg, Jan 28, KNT: An avalanche struck the New Truck Yard area of Sonamarg in central Kashmir on Tuesday night, triggering panic among locals and hoteliers after heavy snow accompanied by strong winds engulfed the zone.

According to officials, the avalanche occurred at around 10:12 pm, following snowfall and gusty winds in the upper reaches. The impact led to snow entering dozens of guest houses in the area, with accumulations reported inside buildings after roofs gave way under pressure.

Teams from the Sonamarg Development Authority and the local police station promptly visited the spot to assess the situation. After inspection, officials confirmed that no major structural damage was reported and, importantly, no injuries or casualties occurred in the incident.

Authorities reiterated that the New Truck Yard area falls within a designated avalanche zone and is historically vulnerable during peak winter months. They recalled that nearly a decade ago, an avalanche had hit the same locality, resulting in significant damage and loss of life, underlining the persistent risk in the region.
