Budget Focused on Rural Economy, Agriculture to Get Major Boost: Omar Abdullah

Srinagar, Feb 14, KNT: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday said that the government’s Budget has placed clear emphasis on strengthening the rural economy, asserting that agriculture will receive a significant boost in the coming financial year.
Addressing a gathering at the SKUAST Goonagal festival, the Chief Minister lauded the role of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, stating that the institution is doing commendable work in advancing agricultural research and extension services across Jammu and Kashmir.
He stressed the need to improve both productivity and quality of agricultural produce, particularly in view of evolving global trade dynamics. Referring to the possibility of increased entry of US agricultural products into Indian markets, Abdullah cautioned that local growers could face challenges if high-value imported products begin to dominate.
The Chief Minister expressed reservations about the perceived benefits of a potential Indo-US trade deal for the agriculture sector, stating that it may adversely impact domestic farmers if adequate safeguards are not ensured.
