Jammu, Feb 13, KNT: Peoples Democratic Party legislator Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi on Friday said that the existing reservation structure in Jammu and Kashmir requires review, asserting that the open merit category will not receive justice unless the reservation is aligned proportionately with the population.
Speaking on the issue, the PDP leader maintained that representation and allocation under reservation policies must be guided by demographic realities. He argued that any imbalance in the system leads to dissatisfaction among sections of society, particularly those competing under the open merit category.
Mehdi said the debate over reservation should not be seen through a political lens but addressed through constitutional and data-driven mechanisms. He stressed the need for a transparent assessment to ensure equitable opportunities for all categories without undermining constitutional safeguards.
The MLA added that a rational and population-based framework would bring clarity and fairness to recruitment and admission processes in the Union Territory. He called for a comprehensive review to remove ambiguities and prevent prolonged disputes over the matter. [KNT]
