 School Gutted in South Kashmir’s Qazigund, Two Firemen Injured


Qazigund, Feb 3, KNT: A fire broke out at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Qazigund on Tuesday morning, causing damage to a portion of the school building and leaving two fire service personnel injured during the firefighting operation.

Officials said the fire alert was received by the District Fire Control Room Qazigund at around 8.38 am, following which fire tenders from Fire Station Qazigund and Fire Station Tunnel were immediately pressed into service. Firefighters reached the spot and launched operations to contain the blaze.

The fire affected parts of a double-storey, L-shaped structure with a GCI sheet roof, resulting in extensive damage to the roof and ceiling area. Officials said timely intervention by the fire services helped prevent the flames from spreading further within the school premises.

During the operation, two fire personnel sustained injuries while battling the fire. They were identified as Fireman Muzaffar Ahmad Wani and Fireman Driver Waseem Mehraj Shah, both posted at Fire and Emergency Services Qazigund. The injured personnel were promptly shifted to a medical facility for treatment, officials said.

The firefighting operation was led by the Station Officer of Qazigund fire station under the guidance of senior officers, and remained under close supervision until the situation was brought fully under control.

Officials said the exact cause of the fire was yet to be determined and an investigation had been initiated to ascertain the circumstances that led to the incident. No casualties among students or staff were reported as the fire occurred in the morning hours. [KNT]
