Jehlum Tragedy: No success for search parties on 2nd day

The search operation to trace the bodies of three missing persons including two children continued on the second day in the river Jehlum along the Gandabal area of Srinagar outskirts.

Six persons including a trio from a single family died while three went missing after a boat carrying at least over a dozen persons capsized yesterday between the Gandabal and Batawara banks of the river Jehlum.

Rescuers continued their operation on Wednesday but without any success.

Local sources told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that two children namely Farhan Waseem Parray and Haziq Showkat and an adult Showkat Ahmed Sheikh who is a mason by profession are still missing.

Efforts to retrieve their bodies didn’t materialize on the second consecutive day.

Inspector General of Police VK Bridi who visited the spot told reporters that all the police stations along the river Jehlum have been alerted and strict vigil is being kept to trace the bodies.

The six victims of this boat capsizing tragedy have already been identified as Shabir Ahmed Bhat, Raziya Bano, Gulzar Ahmed Dar and Firdous and her two sons Tanveer Fayaz and Mudasir Fayaz, all residents of Gandabal.

Those who were rescued are Masrat Begum, Irhada Bilal, Mehraj Dar, Noor Muhammad, Aisha Bilal, her sister Insha Bilal, Humaira Shabir, Muhammad Rafiq Bhat and Mushtaq Ahmed Sheikh, all residents of Gandabal locality. [KNT]
