Theft Case Cracked in Jammu Using NAFIS Fingerprint Technology


Jammu, Feb 18, KNT: Jammu Police have solved a residential theft case in the Domana area by using the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System, leading to the arrest of two accused and recovery of stolen gold ornaments.
Officials said that following a written complaint regarding theft in a house, FIR No. 11/2026 dated January 9, 2026 was registered at Police Station Domana under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Investigation was initiated immediately, and the crime scene was secured.
A team from the Forensic Science Laboratory examined the spot, lifted chance fingerprints and documented the evidence. CCTV footage from nearby areas was also scrutinized to gather supporting material.

Police said the lifted fingerprints were analysed and compared through the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System. The Fingerprint Bureau later confirmed a match with an individual identified as Bhader Ali, a resident of Keran Nallah, Bantalab.
The accused was taken into custody and during questioning allegedly confessed to the theft. He disclosed that he had sold the stolen gold ornaments, comprising two earrings, to another person identified as Bobby, a resident of Digiana, Jammu.
Subsequent searches led to the recovery of the stolen ornaments from the residence of the second accused. Both individuals are presently in custody, and further investigation is underway to ascertain any possible involvement in similar offences.
Police described the recovery through fingerprint matching under NAFIS as a significant technological achievement, underlining their focus on scientific methods in crime detection. [KNT]
