Women’s Welfare Association Protests in Srinagar, Demands Hike in Minimum Wages, Timely Salary Release

Srinagar, Feb 16, KNT: The Jammu and Kashmir Women’s Welfare Association on Monday staged a protest at Municipal Park in Srinagar, demanding an increase in minimum wages and implementation of the Minimum Wages Act.

Scores of women assembled at the park and raised slogans highlighting financial hardships faced by low-paid workers. The protesters questioned how a lone woman could survive on a monthly remuneration of Rs 5100, terming the amount inadequate to meet basic living expenses amid rising costs.

The demonstrators also alleged that salaries are not released on time, further compounding their difficulties. They urged the authorities to ensure timely disbursement of wages and to revise the existing pay structure in line with inflation and statutory provisions.

A significant section of the protest focused on the condition of Anganwadi workers and helpers. The association demanded an increase in their honorarium, stating that the current remuneration does not reflect the workload and responsibilities they shoulder in delivering essential services at the grassroots level.
