FAIMA Demands Action After Resident Doctor Assault Allegation at Safdarjung Hospital

Srinagar, Dec 4, KNT: The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Federation of All India Medical Association has demanded strict action against the Head of the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery department at Safdarjung Hospital following allegations that a resident doctor was physically assaulted inside the Intensive Care Unit.
FAIMA Doctors Association National Executive J&K member Dr Mohammad Momin Khan said the incident, involving HOD Dr Anubhav Gupta, has shaken the medical fraternity and raised urgent concerns over workplace safety in hospitals.
Khan said the association is seeking a written public apology from the HOD and an immediate suspension until a formal enquiry is completed. He said allowing the accused officer to remain in position during the investigation would “undermine the credibility of any probe and send the wrong message to junior staff.”
“This is not just an individual case. It reflects a culture of silence and fear that young doctors are subjected to. Hospitals cannot become zones of intimidation,” Khan said, adding that the alleged assault inside an ICU is a grave professional violation.

Doctors across the region expressed solidarity with the resident doctor, calling for institutional accountability and safeguards to prevent similar incidents. Medical representatives said the issue is not limited to one hospital and reflects a broader problem of power misuse within hierarchical clinical systems.
Sources said the matter has been brought to the notice of hospital authorities and is expected to be reviewed administratively. However, no official statement had been issued by the hospital management by the time this report was filed.
FAIMA warned that continued inaction by authorities could force doctors to seek stronger measures to protect colleagues and ensure dignity at the workplace. [KNT]
