Srinagar, Dec 22, KNT: Large parts of Jammu and Kashmir experienced a fresh spell of precipitation during the past 24 hours, with light to moderate snowfall over higher reaches and rain across several plains. The Meteorological Department said temperatures remained below normal at many stations in both divisions.
According to the data released on Monday, widespread precipitation was recorded between Sunday and Monday morning. Kashmir’s upper reaches including Gulmarg, Sonamarg and other higher belts received light to moderate snowfall, while plains in Srinagar, Kupwara, Anantnag, Budgam, Baramulla and adjoining areas recorded varying levels of rain.
In the Jammu division, Banihal, Bhaderwah, Rajouri, Ramban and other mountainous zones witnessed rain and light snow, while plains including Jammu, Samba and Kathua saw rainfall accompanied by a fall in day temperatures. Foggy conditions continued in the plains, with moderate to dense fog expected through the coming week.

The MeT office said day temperatures stayed 0 to 3 degrees below normal across most of Kashmir and 1 to 5 degrees below normal in parts of the Jammu division. Night temperatures, however, remained 3 to 7 degrees above normal at many locations.
For Monday, the forecast suggests generally cloudy weather with light rain or snow at scattered to fairly widespread places during the afternoon. From December 23 to 29, the weather is expected to remain partly to generally cloudy, while December 30 to January 1 may witness light rain in plains and light snowfall in higher reaches at some locations. Conditions from January 2 to 3 are likely to remain partly to generally cloudy.
Travellers and transporters have been advised to follow traffic and administrative guidelines, particularly in view of persistent fog in the Jammu plains and slippery conditions over high-altitude roads. [KNT]
