Forest Fire Rages in J&K’s Halia Forest of Gool for Third Day, Blaze Threatens Ecologically Rich Forest Belt

Ramban, Jan 11, KNT: A forest fire has been raging in the Halia forest area of Gool in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir for the past three days, raising concern over damage to vegetation in the ecologically sensitive belt, officials said on Sunday.

Officials said teams from the Forest Department, assisted by Fire and Emergency Services, have been engaged in continuous efforts to contain the blaze. However, difficult terrain, dense forest cover and dry conditions have hampered firefighting operations, allowing the fire to persist.

The Halia forest forms part of the forested hills surrounding Gool, an area known for its pine-covered slopes, cool climate and natural meadows. The region is considered environmentally significant due to its rich biodiversity, natural springs and relatively untouched landscape.

Fire officials, as reported by the news agency Kashmir News Trust, said ground teams are working to create fire lines and prevent the flames from spreading further into adjoining forest compartments. Efforts are also being made to control the fire manually, as access for fire tenders remains limited in the hilly terrain.

Authorities said there were no reports of casualties, but a preliminary assessment suggests damage to forest vegetation. A detailed evaluation of the extent of loss will be carried out once the fire is brought under control.

Officials said the situation is being closely monitored and additional manpower may be deployed if required. [KNT]
