Jammu, Feb 3, KNT: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday welcomed the reported reduction in tariffs imposed by the United States on Indian goods, describing the move as a much-needed relief for exporters who have been grappling with severe difficulties.

Reacting to the development, Omar Abdullah said Indian exporters had been under immense pressure due to higher tariffs, which had adversely impacted competitiveness and market access. He said the reported easing of tariffs would provide breathing space to the export sector.

The Chief Minister said the reasons behind the earlier imposition of tariffs were well understood. He remarked that the US had been unhappy with India’s continued purchase of oil from Russia, which had contributed to strained trade measures.

Omar Abdullah, however, said that no official statement had so far been issued by the Government of India on the reported tariff reduction. “We will have to wait for a formal response from the Centre to understand the full implications of the decision,” he said.

He said exporters across the country had been facing hardships due to rising costs and global uncertainties, and any reduction in trade barriers would help stabilize their operations. The Chief Minister expressed hope that the reported move would translate into tangible benefits for Indian businesses engaged in exports.

The situation, he said, would become clearer once official communication is issued by the Union government and trade-related details are formally shared. [KNT]
