Srinagar, Feb 7, KNT: Jammu and Kashmir has pioneered the world’s first QR code-based Geographical Indication certification system, with 51,197 shawls and 19,686 carpets already GI-labelled to ensure authenticity and traceability, the government has said.
The initiative aims to protect traditional crafts from imitation while providing buyers with verifiable information about origin, craftsmanship and genuineness through QR-enabled GI tags.
The government said a total of 18 traditional crafts from Jammu and Kashmir have so far received GI tags, reflecting the region’s rich artisanal heritage. In addition, 17 more crafts are currently in the pipeline for GI registration.
Officials said the QR-based certification system not only safeguards artisans’ livelihoods but also strengthens global branding of Kashmiri handicrafts by enhancing consumer confidence and market value. [KNT]
