Srinagar, Oct 24, KNT: The Centre is considering reinstating Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, five years after it was bifurcated into two Union Territories. Newly elected Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Wednesday, where Shah assured Abdullah of full support and promised to initiate the process of restoration.
The media reports suggest that the meeting, which lasted half an hour, was held in a cordial atmosphere, with Amit Shah pledging the Centre’s backing for the newly elected government and the reinstatement of statehood.
This comes after Omar Abdullah’s government passed a resolution demanding the restoration of statehood in its first cabinet meeting, which was also cleared by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha.
The resolution emphasized that restoring statehood would mark the beginning of a healing process, aimed at reclaiming constitutional rights and safeguarding the identity of Jammu and Kashmir’s residents.

Omar Abdullah is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon to submit the resolution, further cementing the possibility of reinstatement of statehood. [KNT]
