Poonch, July 20, KNT: In a deeply stirring incident that has left residents of Kandi village in the Mendhar subdivision awestruck and emotionally overwhelmed, the intact remains of a husband and wife—buried 24 years apart—were discovered after a landslide struck their ancestral graveyard on Friday morning. The rare discovery is being seen by locals as a sign of divine power and an extraordinary reminder of spiritual truths.

The heavy rainfall that lashed parts of Poonch district on Thursday night led to a landslide in the village graveyard, causing a section of the centuries-old burial ground to erode and expose two adjoining graves. What emerged from the rubble defied all expectations and natural logic: the bodies of Moulana Ibrahim Mughal, who passed away 24 years ago, and his wife Kaneez Bi, who died four years ago, were found unspoiled—their burial shrouds intact and bodies without any visible signs of decomposition.

“We were stunned when we started clearing the debris and saw the bodies in perfect condition,” said Mohammad Javid, a resident who was among the first to witness the scene. “The shrouds looked fresh. There was no smell, no decay. It felt like a miracle sent by God.”

The incident has since gone viral across the region, drawing crowds from neighbouring villages, many of whom described the phenomenon as a manifestation of the Almighty’s will. In accordance with Islamic rites, the bodies were respectfully reburied by evening, in a solemn yet emotionally charged ceremony attended by thousands.

A Graveyard With Generational Legacy

The graveyard where the incident occurred is not a public cemetery but a privately maintained burial ground used by several local families for generations. Locals say Moulana Ibrahim, a respected religious figure in the village, had led a life of devotion and piety, and his wife too was remembered as a humble and God-fearing woman.

The couple had been buried beside each other, and villagers now believe their unchanged physical state is reflective of their spiritual purity. No scientific examination has been ordered so far, and authorities have chosen to remain silent, avoiding any statement that might diminish the faith-based interpretations held by locals.

Historical Echoes: Other Similar Incidents in J&K and Beyond

This is not the first time such a phenomenon has been reported in the region:

  • In 2012, a graveyard in Kupwara’s Lolab Valley reportedly revealed the body of a local imam during an exhumation ordered by the family, found preserved and odorless 17 years after burial. The villagers hailed the deceased as a saintly figure.

  • In 2004, following a flood in the Tral region of Pulwama, the body of an elderly woman was discovered intact with her kafan (shroud) still white, drawing similar spiritual conclusions from the community.

  • In 1995, a grave shifted during an earthquake in Uri, Baramulla district, exposed a local cleric’s body in surprisingly preserved condition 20 years after his death. Again, it became a site of community gathering and reverence.

While science often attributes such preservation to soil composition, moisture, air-tight graves, or climatic factors, these explanations rarely diminish the deep spiritual symbolism people attach to such events, especially in faith-driven societies.

Collective Sentiment and Quiet Reflection

The atmosphere in Kandi village has remained emotionally intense since the discovery. “This is not just a rare event—it’s a message,” said a local elderly resident, wiping tears. “Such things do not happen without a reason. It is a sign to remind us that our deeds live after us, and that divine justice is beyond human understanding.”

The reburial, attended by clerics, elders, and youth alike, became a moment of collective prayer and contemplation. Many expressed that they would never forget the scene in their lifetime.

Although authorities have not launched a formal inquiry, community leaders are urging the government to preserve the site and document the incident to ensure the sacredness of the moment is recorded for future generations.

For now, the people of Mendhar have found solace, awe, and a renewed sense of spiritual awareness in what they see not as a quirk of nature—but as a divine affirmation of faith and purity. [KNT]
