NC Confident of Sweeping 2014 Elections, Says Sagar

Srinagar, May 1, KNT: Senior National Conference leader Ali Mohammad Sagar on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the late Mufti Mohammad Syed, accusing him of acting as a puppet of New Delhi and being responsible for the division within the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC).

Speaking at a party event at NC headquarters in Srinagar, Sagar said that Mufti’s so-called “healing touch” policy was a political gimmick that misled the people of Kashmir. “It was just a hollow slogan. As India’s Home Minister, he oversaw brutalities in Kashmir. And now the same man claimed to be a savior of the people,” Sagar remarked.

He went on to accuse the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), founded by Mufti Mohammad Syed, of exploiting the emotions of Kashmiris while doing little to improve their lives. “PDP promised change but only built palaces for itself. They gave nothing to the people except false hope,” he said.

Sagar further alleged that it was Mufti’s tenure and political maneuvering that led to the fragmentation of the Hurriyat Conference. “He was instrumental in dividing Hurriyat. He brought back Jagmohan to the state, enforced AFSPA, and initiated policies that led to the killing of innocent people,” he charged, describing Mufti’s much-publicized “healing touch” as a “killing touch” instead.

Looking ahead to the then-upcoming Assembly elections, Sagar expressed strong confidence in National Conference’s prospects. “We will sweep the 2014 elections. Our victory will begin in South Kashmir and end in the North. The people trust us—not because others boycott elections, but because NC has always been a dominant force in Jammu and Kashmir,” he concluded. [KNT]
