BJP’s Ashok Koul welcomes Omar Abdullah’s stand on Indus Water Treaty

Srinagar, Jan 10, KNT: Bharatiya Janata Party General Secretary (Organisation) for Jammu and Kashmir, Ashok Koul, has welcomed the statement of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on the Indus Water Treaty, indicating a rare convergence of views between the BJP and the National Conference on the sensitive water-sharing issue.

Ashok Koul told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the concerns raised by Omar Abdullah regarding the Indus Water Treaty reflect long-standing issues that have adversely impacted Jammu and Kashmir. Koul agreed that the treaty needs a serious review keeping in view the interests of the region and its development requirements.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had earlier stated that the Indus Water Treaty has caused significant loss to Jammu and Kashmir by restricting the utilisation of its own water resources. He had maintained that the region must be allowed to harness its water potential for power generation, irrigation, and overall economic development. [KNT]
