Death of man in police custody: Magisterial probe ordered

Authorities have ordered a magisterial inquiry after the death of an accused in police custody in Jammu.

Deputy Commissioner Jammu ordered a magisterial probe into the custodial death of the man. The probe is to be conducted by Sub Divisional Magistrate Khour.

The accused arrested by police in a money dispute case died in police custody of Jourian Police in Jammu.

Jourian Police on December 21 arrested the accused Sunil Kumar alias Sonu of Garhi- Bishnan area of Jourian Jammu in a 2014 money dispute case. The arrest warrant was issued by 2nd Additional District Judge Jammu.

The accused was supposed to appear in court the next day, but developed some complications. He was sent to CHC Jourian early on December 22 where he did not respond to the treatment and was declared dead, the reports suggest.

The death of the accused had sparked a protest while the family of the accused had sought an impartial inquiry. [KNT]
