Seeks Return of File Pertaining to Elected Government’s Powers
Says Time to Respect Spirit of Democracy and Federalism
Srinagar, June 20, KNT: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Friday sought to set the record straight over recent interpretations of his remarks regarding the limits of his authority. Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister categorically stated that he never said he doesn’t enjoy any power, and that such claims were either misquoted or misunderstood.
Clarifying his position, Omar Abdullah said the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act leaves no room for ambiguity on the division of powers between the elected government and the Lieutenant Governor (LG). “The powers rest with the elected government as per the Reorganisation Act, while the LG’s role is clearly defined, to maintain law and order and ensure the safety and protection of the people,” he said.
The Chief Minister further added that if there is any confusion or delay in administrative decision-making, it must be resolved in the spirit of the Constitution. “The Reorganisation Act is unambiguous, and I sincerely hope that the LG will return the file related to the elected government’s powers without unnecessary delay,” he said.
