Hundreds of Political Parties Deregistered for Inactivity

The Election Commission has removed 334 registered but unrecognised political parties from its records after they failed to contest a single election in the past six years and could not be physically traced at their declared addresses.

The delisted parties belong to various states and Union Territories. The poll panel explained that the move followed a review of compliance with the essential criteria for maintaining registration.

Out of a total of 2,854 registered unrecognised political parties in the country, the number now stands reduced to 2,520 after this round of verification and cleanup.

According to official figures, India currently has six recognised national parties and 67 recognised state parties.
