The Ministry of Railways has approved two significant projects for Jammu and Kashmir, including a new Baramulla–Uri railway line and the doubling of the Qazigund–Budgam section, in what is being described as a major boost to connectivity and security in the region.
According to the ministry, the 40.2-kilometre Baramulla–Uri line will extend rail connectivity to the border town of Uri, close to the Kaman Post. The project involves the construction of three Road Under Bridges and nine Road Over Bridges. Officials said the line will provide all-weather access to Uri, which often remains cut off during winter due to road blockades.
The project also carries strategic significance, as both Baramulla and Uri tehsils host key Army establishments close to the Line of Control. The line will be developed as a new single broad-gauge track and will require fresh land acquisition.

The ministry further announced that the 73.5-kilometre Qazigund–Budgam doubling project has been cleared to ease congestion on the existing single line that currently extends up to Baramulla. Once completed, the doubling will allow smoother movement of trains, including military specials carrying troops and equipment.
“With the Katra–Banihal section scheduled for commissioning in 2025, the Kashmir rail corridor will stand fully integrated with the national network, opening avenues for passenger growth and freight movement,” the statement said.
Railway officials noted that the new projects are aimed at improving both civilian convenience and strategic mobility in the Valley. The enhanced corridor is expected to reduce travel time, expand economic opportunities, and strengthen logistical support for the armed forces deployed in the region.
