SIA Raids in Anantnag, Pulwama Over Hizbul Commander’s Escape

Srinagar, Sep 10, KNT: Jammu and Kashmir Police’s State Investigation Agency (SIA) on Wednesday carried out raids in Anantnag and Pulwama districts in connection with the 2005 escape of a top Hizbul Mujahideen commander to Pakistan.

An SIA spokesperson said searches were conducted early morning at two locations linked to the case of Hizbul Mujahideen divisional commander Amin Baba, who managed to cross over to Pakistan nearly two decades ago.

According to the agency, Baba’s escape was facilitated with the support of former MLA Gul Rafeeqi and others, who allegedly arranged a fake passport for him. Baba was ferried from Anantnag to Attari in the official vehicle of the then legislator, enabling him to slip across the border.

The case was initially registered at Bijbehara police station in 2005 before being transferred to the SIA Kashmir in 2023.

“So far, SIA Kashmir has successfully filed a chargesheet against four persons, including the former MLA and his private secretary. Searches are continuing to trace others involved in the conspiracy,” the spokesperson said.

Baba, who has been absconding since his escape, was declared a proclaimed offender by the government in December last year. [KNT]
