Ten Years Without Water: Kunzar Colony Cries for Basic Necessity

Baramulla, Dec 26, KNT: Locals of New Colony Waripora in the Kunzar–Tangmarg area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district are facing a severe and prolonged drinking water crisis, alleging that the locality has been deprived of a regular water supply for the past ten years.
Locals said the absence of potable water has forced them to live under extremely difficult conditions, affecting daily life and posing serious health risks. The residents have accused the Jal Shakti Department of persistent neglect, particularly holding the Assistant Executive Engineer of the PHE Sub Division Beerwah responsible for failing to ensure water supply despite the colony falling under the department’s jurisdiction.
According to the locals, all required formalities for water connection were completed long ago and monthly water charges are being paid regularly. However, they alleged that despite fulfilling all obligations, the department has failed to provide this basic necessity.

Locals said several delegations have repeatedly approached the Assistant Executive Engineer PHE Beerwah as well as the Executive Engineer PHE Tangmarg, seeking immediate redressal. Despite repeated assurances, they alleged that no concrete steps have been taken so far, leaving the issue unresolved.
Residents said the prolonged crisis has hit women, children, elderly persons and patients the hardest, with families forced to rely on unsafe and costly alternative water sources. They warned that the situation has increased both health risks and financial strain on households.
Appealing for urgent intervention, locals expressed hope that the long pending issue would finally be resolved in the interest of public welfare. [KNT]
