Farooq Abdullah Slams Calls for Separate Jammu State, Warns Against Politics of Hate

Srinagar, Jan 19, KNT: Former Chief Minister and senior National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah on Monday came down heavily on elements demanding separate statehood for Jammu, alleging that hatred is being deliberately spread to win elections and divide society.

Talking to reporters, Abdullah questioned the identity of those seeking separation, saying hatred has now become visible everywhere. He said India has always stood for unity in diversity, but warned that this foundational idea is under serious threat.

Farooq Abdullah, as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust said that instead of asking questions about Bollywood, attention should be focused on what is happening in Jammu and Kashmir, where, according to him, certain elements are actively spreading hatred and promoting division.

Referring to the controversy surrounding Shri Mata Vaishno Devi College, Abdullah said Muslim children had secured admission on merit but were subjected to hostility. He questioned who the elements were that played a role in denying recognition to the institution despite it having been approved as a medical college, and asked who should be held responsible for the prevailing atmosphere of hatred in Jammu.

Responding to a question on Pakistan, Abdullah said Pakistan will never leave Kashmir. He said they had fought Pakistan and chose the path laid down by Mahatma Gandhi, but questioned whether the country today still reflects Gandhian values.

He further asked whether people are truly at ease in the present situation, stating that growing intolerance and division have created an atmosphere of unease among the people. [KNT]
