Kashmir’s Shallabugh wetland records massive influx of migratory birds this winter

Srinagar, Jan 9, KNT: Over 2.5 lakh migratory birds have arrived at the Shallabugh Wetland, officials said on Friday, marking a significant seasonal influx at one of Kashmir’s important wetland habitats.

Officials from the wildlife department told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the arrival has been recorded during the ongoing winter migratory season, with large flocks of birds settling across the wetland. They said the wetland has witnessed the presence of several migratory species that travel thousands of kilometres from Central Asia, Europe, and colder regions to escape harsh winters.

According to officials, the wetland’s favourable conditions, including adequate water levels, availability of food, and relatively undisturbed habitat, have contributed to the high number of arrivals this season. The officials said that Shallabugh plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance and serves as a vital stopover and wintering ground for migratory birds in Kashmir. They added that steps are being taken to ensure protection of the habitat and to minimize human disturbance during the peak migratory period.

Authorities have appealed to locals living around the wetland to cooperate with conservation efforts and avoid activities that could disturb the birds or damage the fragile ecosystem.
