Road status for Jan 2: Jammu–Srinagar highway open, Sinthan and Mughal roads shut

Srinagar, Jan 2, KNT: The Traffic Police Headquarters J&K on Thursday issued a traffic plan and advisory for January 2, 2026, citing slow vehicular movement and multiple road closures due to fresh snowfall across several stretches.

According to the advisory, slow movement was observed on the NH-44 due to single-lane traffic at Ballanalla, Dewal, Nashri Dalwas and between Marog and Kishtwari Pather. The situation was further impacted by the breakdown of two heavy motor vehicles on the highway.

Authorities have urged commuters to strictly follow lane discipline, warning that overtaking and wrong-lane driving could lead to congestion.

Subject to fair weather and improved road conditions, light motor vehicles, passenger vehicles and private cars will be allowed to ply from both sides on NH-44. The Traffic Police said traffic movement will be regulated in coordination with the Traffic Control Unit Ramban.

Security Forces convoy movement on the Jammu Srinagar highway will also be permitted from both sides, subject to fair weather and road conditions, after confirmation from TCU Ramban.

Meanwhile, several roads have been closed due to fresh snow accumulation. The Kishtwar Sinthan Anantnag road remains closed for vehicular movement. The Srinagar Sonamarg Gumar road has also been shut due to snowfall. The Mughal Road has been closed for traffic following fresh snow accumulation.

The Traffic Police have advised people to undertake travel only after confirming the latest road status from traffic control units and PCR helplines.

Authorities have urged commuters to remain cautious and cooperate with traffic personnel to ensure smooth movement and public safety. [KNT]
