Medical Students’ Body Seeks Minister’s Intervention Over Internship Disparity

New Delhi, Feb 10, KNT: The All India Medical Students Association has written to the Health and Medical Education Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Sakina Itoo, seeking urgent intervention against what it described as a discriminatory and retrospective imposition of a two year internship on Foreign Medical Graduates in the Union Territory.
In its representation, AIMSA objected to the decision of the Jammu and Kashmir Medical Council to enforce a two year internship on a limited group of FMG students, while others from the same batch have been granted a one year internship.
Dr Mohammad Momin Khan, National Representative of AIMSA and Acting President J and K, said that a small number of students from the same academic batch are being selectively subjected to a different regulatory framework. He said that most students of the batch are being governed under the National Medical Commission notification dated July 28, 2022, while only 13 students are being asked to follow a later notification dated August 7, 2025, which, according to the students, does not pertain to internship norms but relates to anti ragging guidelines.

The affected FMG students stated that applying different rules to students of the same batch amounts to unequal treatment. They said the decision has resulted in serious academic, financial, and psychological stress, particularly as the additional year of internship is reportedly being imposed without stipend.
AIMSA has termed the move arbitrary and against the principles of natural justice. The association has urged the government to ensure parity with other states, allow a one year internship in line with earlier batches, release pending stipend hikes, and apply any new criteria only prospectively and uniformly.
The students’ body has appealed to the J&K government to intervene at the earliest to ensure fairness and consistency in the implementation of internship regulations for Foreign Medical Graduates. [KNT]
