JK Students Association Seeks TN CM’s Intervention After Kashmiri Doctor Asked to Shave Beard

Srinagar, June 26, KNT: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association has written to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, seeking immediate action in a case of alleged religious discrimination against Dr. Zubair Ahmad, a Muslim doctor from Kashmir who was reportedly asked to shave his beard to secure admission at Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital (KMCH), Coimbatore.

Dr. Zubair had secured a DrNB (Nephrology) seat through NEET-SS counselling. However, upon reporting to KMCH, he was allegedly asked to sign a policy prohibiting beards—despite his offer to cover it and comply with hygiene protocols. The hospital, according to the Association, remained firm in its demand, forcing him to withdraw from the course.

National Convenor Nasir Khuehami said Dr. Zubair completed his MBBS, MD, and residency at SKIMS, Srinagar, without any such restrictions. He has now requested the NBEMS to allow his participation in the next counselling round and refund his Rs 2 lakh deposit.

Calling the incident a violation of Article 25 of the Constitution, the Association condemned KMCH’s policy as discriminatory and unnecessary, saying it disregards religious freedoms and sends an exclusionary message to minority students.

The Association urged the Tamil Nadu CM to intervene, calling for protection of constitutional rights and reaffirmation of Tamil Nadu’s inclusive legacy. [KNT]
