J&K Students Association Seeks DGP Probe into Ramban Youth Disappearance After Alleged Cow Vigilante Chase

mban, April 13, KNT: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association on Monday sought the intervention of Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat, calling for a time-bound and transparent investigation into the disappearance of a youth in Ramban district following an alleged chase by suspected cow vigilantes

The youth, identified as Tanveer Ahmad Chopan, son of Abdul Salam Chopan and a resident of Pogal in Ukhral tehsil, goes missing under what the association described as highly suspicious circumstances near Makarkoot along the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway.

The case assumes significance as it links a missing person incident with allegations of vigilantism, triggering protests and raising concerns over law and order along a critical highway corridor.

According to the association, Tanveer was traveling from Jammu to his native village in a Tata Mobile vehicle, transporting a milch cow and two calves, described as his primary source of livelihood.

State President Mubashir Ahmad alleged that near Digdool on NH-44, the vehicle was chased by two unidentified vehicles carrying suspected miscreants. Upon reaching Makarkoot, the youth was reportedly intercepted, dragged out, and assaulted.

The association said local accounts suggest that the attackers were acting under the pretext of cow vigilantism, though the exact sequence of events remains to be officially established.

A delegation led by Mubashir Ahmad, along with Vice District President Ramban Manzoor Naik, met Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Alyas Khan and Senior Superintendent of Police Arun Gupta, seeking immediate action and accountability.

The association urged the police to identify and arrest those responsible, stating that delays in action risk deepening public anxiety and eroding trust in institutions.

It further claimed that the youth reportedly jumped into a nallah while attempting to escape his attackers, prompting ongoing search efforts by rescue teams.

Mubashir Ahmad said the incident reflects a “troubling pattern” of similar cases in Ramban district, warning of a rise in vigilantism that could threaten communal harmony and the rule of law.

The association called for a credible and impartial probe with accountability fixed at all levels, while also appealing to the public to maintain calm and not allow the incident to disturb the region’s peace.

Authorities have not yet issued a detailed official account of the sequence of events, and investigation is underway. [KNT]
