Leopard kills five sheep in Beerwah, six injured


Budgam, Feb 9, KNT: A leopard attack in the Larbal area of Beerwah in Budgam district resulted in the death of five sheep and injuries to six others, causing significant losses to a livestock-owning family, officials said on Monday.

Officials said a total of 12 sheep were attacked during the incident. The affected livestock belonged to Bashir Ahmad Sheikh, son of Mohammad Akbar Sheikh, an inhabitant of Larbal. The attack has dealt a severe blow to the family, which relies on livestock as its primary source of livelihood.

Soon after the incident, a team from the Sheep Husbandry Department Budgam reached the spot and provided first aid to the injured animals. Officials said the condition of the injured sheep is being monitored.

Locals expressed concern over the increasing movement of wild animals near habitation areas and urged the authorities to take immediate preventive measures to avoid further incidents.

The livestock owner told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the loss has left his family shocked and distressed. He said livestock is his only means of livelihood and appealed for timely assistance and compensation.

Meanwhile, the Wildlife Department Jammu and Kashmir has issued an advisory, urging inhabitants to remain vigilant and adopt precautionary measures to prevent human wildlife conflict.

Officials said further steps are being considered to address the issue and reduce the risk of similar incidents in the area. [KNT]
