Police Intensify Anti-Drug Campaign with Awareness Drive at Wanla School


Sham June 20,KNT: In a concerted effort to combat the growing menace of substance abuse among youth, the District Police Sham organized a comprehensive drug awareness programme at Government Higher Secondary School, Wanla.
The event formed part of an ongoing community outreach campaign launched by the newly established Sham District Police. Conducted under the supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sham, Malik Aijaz (JKPS), the initiative aimed to educate, sensitize, and empower students and rural communities about the dangers of narcotics.
The awareness sessions were jointly conducted by Station House Officer (SHO) Tsewang Norboo Onpo of Police Station Khaltsi and General Forensic Assistant Ms. Purnima Sharma. The speakers provided students, faculty members, and local residents with a detailed understanding of the far-reaching consequences of drug addiction.
Addressing the gathering, the resource persons highlighted the scientific effects of substance abuse, explaining how narcotics can permanently alter brain chemistry, impair judgment, and severely damage physical health. They also emphasized the social repercussions of addiction, noting that drug abuse not only affects individuals but also devastates families and weakens the social fabric of communities.

The speakers further briefed participants on the stringent legal provisions under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, warning that involvement in drug-related activities carries severe penalties. They stressed that awareness and vigilance are essential in preventing youth from falling victim to the drug menace.
“The youth are the backbone of our future,” the speakers remarked, urging students to make informed life choices, resist negative peer pressure, and actively contribute towards creating a drug-free society.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and teaching staff. An interactive session followed the lecture, during which students engaged with police and forensic officials, seeking information on drug prevention, rehabilitation facilities, and legal safeguards.
Local community members appreciated the proactive efforts of the Sham District Police and expressed hope that such awareness initiatives would play a vital role in safeguarding the younger generation from the dangers of drug abuse.[KNT]
