Leh, Sep 28, KNT: Leh Police have traced and solved a major jewellery shop theft case and recovered stolen jewellery worth around ₹70 lakh along with cash of ₹4.30 lakh, while one of the accused remains at large.
According to police, a written complaint was submitted by Sunil Kumar, a resident of Rajasthan and owner of a jewellery shop at Nowshara Gali, Leh, regarding a theft from his shop during the intervening night of August 18 and 19.
Following the complaint, FIR No. 204/2026 under Sections 305(a) and 331(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at Police Station Leh. The investigation was entrusted to SI Dorjay Zangpo under the supervision of the SHO Police Station Leh, ASP Headquarters Leh and SSP Leh.

During inspection of the crime scene, police found that the thieves had allegedly entered the shop through a tin door adjacent to the premises and subsequently broke through a stone wall to create an opening into the shop.
The accused allegedly decamped with jewellery valued at around ₹80–90 lakh besides cash. They also allegedly cut the CCTV wires and removed the DVR from the premises.
Police said no significant clue was initially found at the scene or in the adjoining areas. Investigators subsequently examined CCTV footage and noticed a white-coloured vehicle along with three persons moving under suspicious circumstances near Polo Ground during late hours.
Further investigation into the vehicle, with information obtained through Municipality Leh and Police Data Centre Leh, helped investigators develop details about its owner. Police said technical resources, human intelligence and sustained field investigation were then used to identify the suspects.
A police team comprising SI Dorjay Zangpo, SI Stanzin Konkhain and other personnel was subsequently sent to Pattan in Baramulla district, where, with the assistance of Pattan Police, the team apprehended the alleged principal accused, identified as Nisar Ahmad Dar, son of Abdul Rahman Dar, a resident of Chanabal, Mirgund, Pattan.
Police said stolen jewellery worth approximately ₹70 lakh, along with ₹4.30 lakh in cash, was recovered during the investigation following the accused’s disclosure.
The investigation has further revealed the involvement of three persons in the theft, including a juvenile who was allegedly used to enter the shop through the opening made in the wall and bring out the stolen jewellery and cash.
Police said necessary legal proceedings concerning the juvenile are being initiated, while efforts are continuing to apprehend another alleged accomplice who remains absconding.
According to police, the accused persons are also allegedly involved in multiple theft cases registered at different police stations in Kashmir. Police further said one of the absconding accused had recently been released from jail after serving two years of imprisonment under the Public Safety Act.
The case was worked out through CCTV analysis, technical resources, human intelligence and sustained field investigation, police said. [KNT]
