Contaminated Lam Nallah Water Sparks Health Concerns in Tral; Ban Imposed on Bathing

Tral, June 25, KNT: Authorities in Tral sub-division of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district have imposed an immediate ban on bathing in Lam Nallah, a vital source of drinking water for residents of Aripal tehsil, following alarming reports of contamination and recent jaundice cases, particularly among children.

In an official communication issued by the Office of the Additional Deputy Commissioner Tral, the ban comes in response to a letter from the Assistant Executive Engineer Jal Shakti Sub-Division Tral and a representation from local residents, highlighting the deteriorating water quality of the stream.

The letter as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust, notes that the Lam Nallah, widely used for drinking and domestic purposes, has been significantly contaminated due to frequent bathing and other activities at the site. “Recent cases of jaundice among children have been attributed to this contamination. It is worth recalling that a similar outbreak occurred last year due to the consumption of polluted water from the same source,” the communication reads.

To prevent the further spread of waterborne diseases, the ADC’s office has instructed the Tehsildar Aripal to immediately install a hoarding at the site, clearly warning the public about the contamination and the ban on bathing. Additionally, the SDPO Tral has been asked to maintain strict vigil over the area to ensure public compliance and prevent any further contamination.
