Militant Killed in Handwara Gunfight; Search Operation Underway

Kupwara, Mar 17, KNT: A militant was gunned down in an early morning encounter with security forces in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Monday.

Police sources revealed that a joint contingent of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Indian Army launched a cordon-and-search operation in Krumhoora village of Zachaldara, Handwara, following intelligence inputs about the presence of militants. Initial reports suggested that at least two militants were holed up in the area.

As security personnel began combing the locality, they came under fire from the hiding militants, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire. “An encounter has erupted in Krumhoora, Zachaldara. Police and security forces are engaged in the operation. Further updates will be shared in due course,” Kashmir Zone Police posted on X.

The operation was still underway when reports last came in, with forces maintaining a tight cordon around the area to eliminate any remaining threat.
