Leh Meat Shops Ordered to Install Opaque Front Panels Within 15 Days

Leh, May 21, KNT: In a move aimed at ensuring public hygiene and civic decorum, the Municipal Committee Leh has directed all meat shops operating within its jurisdiction to install black or tinted glass panels—or similar opaque partitions—at the front display of their establishments within 15 days.
The order, issued by the Executive Officer of the Municipal Committee, is in accordance with the Jammu & Kashmir Municipal Act, 2000. It mandates that meat displays and handling should not be visible to the public, particularly in busy market areas and streets frequented by children, tourists, and local residents.
According to the directive, the measure is intended to promote hygienic practices, safeguard public sensibilities, and maintain aesthetic standards in public spaces. “The initiative is part of a broader effort to encourage responsible trade practices while protecting public health and civic values,” the order states.
The meat shop owners have been given a 15-day window from the date of the order to comply. Failure to do so may result in stringent action under the provisions of the Municipal Act. These could include the imposition of penalties, sealing of the premises, or suspension of trade licenses.
Furthermore, the order reiterates that all meat vendors must strictly adhere to existing sanitary and licensing regulations. Any violations in this regard will also invite legal and administrative action.
Officials said inspections will be carried out to ensure compliance across the town. [KNT]
