Mutton Dealers’ Strike Enters Day 5 in Kashmir, Supply Chain Paralyzed

Srinagar, Jul 30, KNT: The mutton crisis in Kashmir deepened further on Wednesday as the strike by mutton dealers entered its fifth consecutive day, triggering supply shortages across markets and raising alarm among families preparing for the marriage ceremonies.

The strike, led by the Mutton Dealers Association of Kashmir, has brought the supply of meat to a near standstill across the Valley.

General Secretary, Mutton Dealers Association, Mehrajuddin Ganai, criticized the government for failing to address the core issues faced by dealers in Punjab. “We tried to reach out to officials in Punjab, but no one is ready to listen to us. Our transporters and dealers are facing extortion, threats, and harassment on highways. The authorities have turned a blind eye,” Ganai said.

Dealers claim that despite paying all taxes and duties, they are being arbitrarily stopped and extorted while transporting livestock from Punjab to Kashmir. “We are not asking for favors, just a fair and safe system to carry out our trade,” a protesting dealer said.

The timing of the strike has compounded worries as Kashmir’s wedding season gathers pace. “If the strike continues, it will directly impact wedding functions. Mutton is essential for traditional Wazwan. This disruption is unbearable,” said a Srinagar-based caterer who fears mass cancellations.
