Tarigami Seeks New Media Policy to Ensure Fair Distribution of Govt Advertisements
Calls for Transparency, Protection of Journalists, and Equal Treatment to All Outlets
Srinagar, Oct 30, KNT: Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and MLA Kulgam Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami on Thursday called for the formulation of a new media policy in Jammu and Kashmir to ensure a fair and equitable distribution of government advertisements among print and digital news outlets.
Speaking during the Assembly proceedings, Tarigami said the present system of advertisement allocation lacks transparency and has created disparities that undermine press freedom. He cited the example of Greater Kashmir, one of the Valley’s prominent dailies, which he said has faced continuous suspension of government advertisements, describing such actions as arbitrary and damaging to the democratic fabric.

“Selective allocation of advertisements and denial of financial support to certain newspapers raise serious questions about fairness and objectivity in governance,” Tarigami said. “In a democracy, media cannot be categorised as favourable or unfavourable; it must be allowed to operate independently and critically.”

The veteran legislator said several media houses have been left in limbo while awaiting formal empanelment, leading to uncertainty and financial strain. He urged the government to expedite the process and ensure that advertisement support is extended to all eligible outlets without bias or discrimination.
Tarigami also called for stronger safeguards for journalists’ rights and safety, saying the government has a constitutional responsibility to protect the freedom of the press. “Journalists must be free from intimidation, harassment, or coercion. Press freedom is not a privilege but a cornerstone of a democratic setup,” he said.
He appealed to the Jammu and Kashmir government to adopt a transparent, rule-based policy that upholds fairness in media dealings. “A credible and diverse media landscape is vital for public accountability. The government must demonstrate impartiality and respect towards all journalistic voices,” Tarigami added.
His remarks drew support from several opposition members, who echoed the need for a more inclusive and transparent media framework in the Union Territory. [KNT]
