

Srinagar, Jan 23, KNT: Jammu and Kashmir Police carried out multiple rescue operations across the Union Territory on Friday, saving more than 40 persons who were stranded at different locations due to heavy snowfall, even as Srinagar Police activated round-the-clock emergency helpline services amid worsening weather conditions.
In Poonch district, J&K Police rescued more than 30 passengers who were stranded due to heavy snowfall in the Krishna Ghati area of Mendhar. Officials said vehicles were caught in intense snowfall, leaving passengers stuck for several hours. Police teams immediately rushed to the spot and safely evacuated the stranded passengers to safer locations despite difficult weather and road conditions.
In another timely operation, Udhampur Police successfully rescued 12 persons, including women and children, who were stranded in a heavy snowstorm at Chochru Galla in the Basantgarh area. Officials said the group was trapped due to sudden snowfall and poor visibility. Police personnel braved harsh conditions and challenging terrain to carry out the rescue, preventing a potential tragedy. All rescued persons were reported to be safe.

Meanwhile, in view of the prevailing inclement weather, Srinagar Police activated 24×7 emergency helpline services to assist inhabitants facing difficulties due to snowfall and cold conditions. Officials said the helplines have been set up to respond promptly to emergencies, including distress calls related to weather-induced incidents.
Police authorities have advised inhabitants and travellers to avoid unnecessary movement, particularly in higher reaches, and to strictly follow official advisories issued from time to time. They said police teams remain on high alert across districts to respond swiftly to any emergency arising out of the prevailing weather conditions. [KNT]
