Batamaloo residents take to streets over acute water shortage

Srinagar, July 19, KNT: Residents of Batamaloo in Srinagar took to the streets on Friday to voice their anger over the acute shortage of water in the locality.

The protest, predominantly led by women from the Dyarwani area, saw them blocking the road and staging a sit-in protest, raising slogans against the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department for nearly an hour.

Braving the scorching heat, the protesting ladies sat in a line across the road, forcing commuters to halt their vehicles. The demonstration disrupted the traffic flow in the area as the residents expressed their frustration over the prolonged water crisis.

One of the protesters, speaking to Kashmir News Trust, lamented that the Dyarwani locality has been grappling with an acute shortage of drinking water, and despite repeated appeals, the authorities have turned a blind eye to their plight.

“We have been frequently protesting against the water shortage but our appeals go to deaf ears,” said a local.

The protesters accused the PHE department of failing to address the issue, leaving them with no choice but to take to the streets. “The PHE department has taken us for a ride, leaving us with no option but to stage this protest,” said one of the aggrieved residents adding that they will continue to appear on the roads, till their problem is not addressed.
