Search Operation Underway to Trace Missing Worker in Uri Avalanche

Srinagar, Apr 15, KNT: Three labourers lost their lives while another remained missing after a snow avalanche struck the Dara Kujul area in the Boniyar sector of Uri in north Kashmir on Tuesday.

Officials said that the tragedy occurred when a group of labourers were working in the mountainous region amid a sudden change in weather that triggered multiple avalanches. The victims were reportedly caught off guard and buried under a heavy mass of snow.

Rescue teams comprising police, army, and locals rushed to the spot soon after the incident and launched an operation to trace the trapped workers. After several hours of search, the bodies of three labourers were recovered, while one person was still untraced till late evening.

The deceased have been identified as Din Mohammad Sodh, Karim Sodh, and Latif Ahmed Sodh. Efforts were underway to locate the fourth labourer, who is believed to have been working alongside the victims when the avalanche struck.

“Teams are continuing the operation despite difficult terrain and poor weather conditions. The snow depth in the area has made the search challenging,” said an official involved in the rescue effort.

Authorities have advised workers and locals to avoid venturing into avalanche-prone areas as the region continues to witness erratic weather conditions and fresh snowfall in upper reaches. [KNT]
