A local court here in Srinagar Thursday sent a non-local ‘imposter’ to judicial custody.

Srinagar Police had arrested a man from Gujarat after inputs that he was masquerading as a top official from Prime Minister’s Office and was not only enjoying the government patronage but also befooling the top government officers.

The imposter was arrested from an area falling under the jurisdiction of police station Nishat. He was identified as Kiran Bhai Patel son of Jagdesh Bhai Patel, a resident of Gujarat.

For cheating and befooling people and masquerading as a top government official, police registered an FIR vide number 19/2023 under section 419 (cheating done by impersonation), 420 (cheating), 467 (Forgery of a valuable security, will or authority to make or transfer any valuable security, or to receive any money, etc), 468 (forgery, intending that the document or electronic record forged shall be used for the purpose of cheating), 471 (fraudulently or dishonestly uses as genuine any document or electronic record) against him.

Police sources said that the con man was impersonating as Additional Director (Strategy & Campaigns) PMO, New Delhi.

They said that an investigation into this matter is in progress and more arrests are expected. Sources added that police are trying to know ‘who’s who’ is on the list of fraudster whom he met during his stay in Kashmir and what he demanded from them. [KNT]
