Drone Flying Banned in Leh Amid Security Concerns

Leh, May 8, KNT: Amid heightened security concerns following recent military developments, authorities in the Union Territory of Ladakh have imposed a blanket ban on the use of drones and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in Leh district. The move, announced on Thursday, aims to prevent potential misuse of aerial technology by anti-national elements.
Citing credible intelligence inputs and the likelihood of threats to sensitive installations and public safety, District Magistrate of Leh, Santosh Sukhadeve, issued an order prohibiting the flying, operation, or use of drones by locals, tourists, or private individuals within the district’s jurisdiction.
“This order is issued ex-parte in the interest of public safety and security and shall remain in force until further notice,” the magistrate stated.
The restriction comes just a day after the Indian armed forces carried out missile strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, triggering concerns about possible retaliation or security breaches in border regions like Ladakh.
The order, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, follows a formal request from the Superintendent of Police, Leh, to regulate drone activity in the region.
Authorities have warned that any violation of the directive will invite strict legal action under relevant laws. Furthermore, residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any unauthorized drone activity to the nearest police station or the Police Control Room. [KNT]
