No-Fly Zone Declared for Amarnath Yatra Route from July 1, Govt Bans Drones, UAVs Along Both Pahalgam and Baltal Routes

Srinagar, June 17, KNT: In a major step towards strengthening the security grid for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, the Jammu and Kashmir Home Department has declared the entire pilgrimage route—from both Pahalgam and Baltal axes, a strict ‘No Flying Zone’ starting from July 1.
The aerial restrictions, enforced under directives from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, will remain in effect until August 10 and prohibit the use of all unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), drones, and even recreational flying devices such as balloons. This sweeping ban is aimed at ensuring round-the-clock surveillance and preventing any airborne threats during the 40-day religious pilgrimage.
However, exceptions have been carved out for emergencies. “These restrictions shall not apply to medical evacuations, disaster management missions, or authorized surveillance operations conducted by the security forces,” an official statement said. The administration is also preparing a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to regulate such exceptions.
This move comes just weeks after heightened security concerns following an attack in the Pahalgam area. Officials confirmed that additional security layers are being added this year to maintain a peaceful atmosphere for the Yatra.
Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan is in Srinagar today to preside over a high-level meeting with top officials of police, intelligence, and paramilitary forces. The focus is to assess preparedness and streamline coordination among various security agencies.
The Amarnath Yatra is set to begin on July 3 and conclude on August 9. As per official sources, nearly 580 companies of Central Armed Paramilitary Forces will be deployed to secure the pilgrimage routes, base camps, and critical checkpoints.
The government has also asked pilgrims to strictly follow advisories and cooperate with security personnel throughout the course of the Yatra. [KNT]
