Minor Drowns in River Jhelum in North Kashmir

Bandipora, July 4, KNT: A minor drowned in the River Jhelum in the village in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district
Officials said the deceased, identified as 12-year-old Shahid Ahmad, son of Tariq Ahmad Wani and a resident of Baharabad Hajin, accidentally slipped into the river and was swept away by the strong current.
The incident occurred early in the day. Locals quickly alerted the authorities, following which a joint rescue operation was launched by police and SDRF personnel to trace the missing boy.
As of the time of filing this report, the rescue teams were continuing their search efforts in the fast-flowing waters of the Jhelum, though the body had not yet been recovered.
Local sources said that children in the area often visit the riverside to bathe or play during summer months, a common yet risky practice that has led to multiple such tragedies in the past. [KNT]
